What to Do for Fun in Ushuaia
There was surprisingly lots to do for a city at the end of the world
When I planned my 3-month trip to Chile and Argentina and my 6-week stay in Ushuaia, I didn’t think about whether I would be bored. I mean, I expected to miss my friends and family, my own living space, and the running trails near my apartment. But I thought I would be so wrapped up in the adventure and romance of the research for my novel that I wouldn’t miss other ways of having fun.
But once I returned from my adventure in Puerto Williams, I settled into a regular routine of remote work and research in Ushuaia (mostly visiting museums), and it turned out that six weeks is too long of a time to be solely focused on the task of research.
In the evenings, when my brain was tired from my day job and puzzle of research, I needed something else to think about. And I was ready for people interaction after spending hours on end in the quiet bedroom where I slept and worked. The long, dark evenings could be oppressive otherwise.
Fortunately, the host family I was staying with was very kind, and their adult children invited me to join them in some of their activities. Through them (and a few other means), I got a taste of what there was to do in the city.
There was surprisingly a lot to do for a smallish city on the edge of the world. Here’s a sampling of what I found.
